Do you want to see the Big Five?.jpg)
The phrase "Big Five" was promoted by big-game hunters and refers to the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot, as they are among the most dangerous mammals. It is not relevant to their size as many people believe, which is why the leopard is on the list and the hippopotamus is not on the list. The term is still used in most tourist and wildlife promotions that discuss African wildlife safaris.
Sighting the "Big Five" has become something of a quest for many people when coming on safari, and the Kruger National Park has more than its fair share of these, with an estimated 1,500 lion, 12,000
elephant, 2,500 buffalo, 1,000 leopards and 5,000 rhino (black and white). We don’t usually promote sighting these it as a priority, as there are plenty of other fascinating animals and birds in the African bush, but I think when planning a trip to Southern Africa, you need to know where you are more likely to see these animals.
The most difficult to see in the wild, despite its size, is the largely nocturnal leopard. The best location to see leopards in Africa is in the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve in South Africa, where leopards are habituated to safari vehicles and are seen on a daily basis at very close range.
