The Natal Midlands expands from the foothills of the Drakensberg in the west, to the Coast in the east. This stretch is about 80km’s long and boasts amazing sights, sounds and activities. Despite the numerous rivers that make their way through the Natal Midlands and the creation of their indigenous forests in the region, the main attraction is the “arts and crafts trail”, the
Midlands Meander. In 1985 local artists, potters and weavers decided to join forces to create an arts and crafts route, where six studios were opened and the Midlands Meander was born. Another more famed aspect of the Midland Meander Route is the
Battlefields Route. It was here that The Voortrekkers were confronted by Zulu armies, and where the mighty British Army was defeated by the power of the Zulu nation. It is hard to imagine that this tranquil and beautiful area was once the centre of military clashes of the Anglo-Boer War. But in fact, this region boasts the largest concentration of battlefields in South Africa and attracts history lovers from all around the world. Every town, historical building, battle site and memorial has a fascinating story to tell.
