Traditionally a fishing village,
Hermanus has become a hive of activity and is known as the nursing ground of whale and boasts the
best land based whale watching in the world. August to November is usually the best time to see the Southern Right Whale in our waters, and in particular within Hermanus’ Walker Bay, as this is where they come to calve. These mammals, which often come as close to 50 metres from the shore, are given to displays of
breaching, lobtailing, spyhopping and courtship rituals, and there can be up to 30 whales in the bay at one time. During this season, you will find the rocks and cliffs brimming with eager visitors, not daring to blink in case they miss a breach! The waterside hotels and guesthouses in that area are the most recommended, as then you get to enjoy this spectacle from the comfort of your room or balcony, or take advise from the
resident whale-cryer, who walks the streets giving advise about the best viewing sites of the day.
